Gina is hosting a discussion about Daniel Immerwahr’s How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States (2019). If you want to jump into an engaging conversation about some of the lesser-discussed corners of history, this one is for you 🟥.
Proof Readers Book Club

Cocktails, mocktails, and brews.
Ravioli, spaghetti, and greens.
Books, buddies, and conversation.
No formal program; just reading, chatting, and consuming. Bring something for the book exchange, or just take something home.
Make some friends where Fort Street Mall meets Chaplain Lane. Socializing (as always) is optional!

5:00 to 6:30
Meet your people (including our host, Gail the Librarian) at your people’s favorite Windward space!
5:00 to 5:15: Arrive, settle in, and chat if you want to-but no pressure!). We’ll take a group photo of the books!
5:15 – 6:15: One solid, uninterrupted hour of beautiful, silent reading.
6:15 – 6:45: Share what you’re reading, trade recommendations, browse the stacks, and talk story.
The library closes at 7, so come a little early if you crave extra book time or just want to explore this long-awaited, newly renovated space.
The library’s official address is on Kamehameha Highway, but don’t try to turn in from Kamehameha Hwy. Enter from Waikalua Road, drive past the police station, and you’ll see the library’s parking lot right behind the library.
There’s also parking on the hill. You’ll see what we mean.

Bring whatever you are currently reading, or show up early and discover something on the library shelves. It’s a library!
Honolulu Silent Book Club vs. The World
Thursday, September 10, six to eight!
In the near corner, wearing cloth binding in a faux leather cover and sprayed edges, Honolulu’s own page-turning, time-burning, knowledge-earning, questionably discerning SILENT BOOK CLUB!
In the far corner, wearing the noise of daily existence and a sense of impending doom, THE WORLD.
It promises to be a heck of a showdown in front of Whole Foods Market at Kahala Mall, from 6 to 8. Lots of free parking. Many options for food and drink, but no pressure to spend money.
Look for us at the big round table. If you spot two hippos perched atop a book, you’re found your people.
Bring something to read! Bring anything to read!
We’ll say hi, take an optional group photo, and read quietly for an hour. Then stick around and chat, keep reading, or call it a night. Socializing is always optional!
Bring a book for the book exchange table, or just pick a few up for later.
If it rains, we’ll try to get the covered tables under the eave, or perhaps find space inside the mall.

Come read with us!
Enter the building, go to the left wing and head straight back. You’ll find Emily and your book-loving friends.
We’ll do some quick voluntary photos to show off what everyone is reading, we’ll chat a while, and then we’ll read quietly for a blissful hour.
The library closes at 7, so come a little early if you’d like to browse and borrow.
Parking: Metered street parking is all around the library. Street parking’s free at 6:00.
The Iolani Palace lot is super close and secure. It also becomes free at 6:00, when they shut the gate. If you need to bail before 7:00, just flag down a security guard and they’ll let you out.
Your assigned reading is—just kidding! There’s no assigned reading! Read anything you want!
