The Boba Room in Waipahu
6 to 8
December 18 Thursday

Everyone (including new faces!) welcome.

Bring something to read:
Physical book, audiobook, ebook, or whatever.

Bring a wrapped white elephant book
for the grab bag gift exchange.

This is not a full-on potluck, but feel free to bring treats or snacks to share. Plates, utensils, and napkins are taken care of.

Text Mitchell 830-255-7423 if you’d like a ride either way!

(I’ll be there early, so come whenever and get a head start on caffeination if you like)

The kitty lamps are getting ready for silent reading Thursday night! Are you?

Meet at the enormous round table outside Whole Foods Market, if it’s available. Look for two hippos perched atop a book on the table, and you’ll know you found us. We’ll have the book exchange table again, so bring a book or two if you’d like to make room on your bookshelf. Or find some good ones to take home!

Plenty of free parking, and of course many options for food and drink (even beer at Puka’s if you consume in our usual meeting area), but no pressure to spend money at all.

Text Mitchell if you’d like a ride home! 830-255-7423!

We’ll follow roughly this schedule:

6:00 say hi (or not!), get something to eat or drink (or not!)

6:30 optional group photo, read whatever you’ve brought in whatever format! Yes, of course audiobooks are welcome!

7:30 chat or keep reading or call it a night!

We’re not rigid about time, so these are just approximations. 🙂

It’s been a bit noisy lately, so if you’re sensitive to the sounds of yelling kids, beeping trucks, and loud engines, bring some noise-canceling ear things if you have them.

RAIN PLAN: We’ll try to get the tables right by the Whole Foods door, beneath the eaves, and take a few tables inside the mall. If you usually come early (Baron, Terecia, Deb, and Jacob!) and the weather is yucko, maybe we can try to claim tables inside early. I haaaaate to forgo the introductions and stuff so somebody think of how we might do it in the mall without drawing mall security’s attention.

Can’t wait to read with you. And you’re not going to BELIEVE what I’m bringing to read! 🌹 Aco-scuse me?

We are celebrating the holidays with a readup at The Boba Room in the Waipahu Shopping Plaza, the same plaza as Savers and Max’s of Manila. 94-300 Farrington Hwy, #G-15.

This isn’t a full-on potluck, but we’ll share some treats and snacks if you can bring some.

Bring a wrapped (or gift-bagged) white elephant book for the grab bag activity. Order some yummy drinks if you can!

6:00. Say hi, have a snack, order a drink (if you can!).

6:15. White elephant grab bag game.

6:45. Read! Bring whatever you want!

7:30. Call it a night, stick around and chat, or keep reading.

The Boba Room closes at 8:00!

Text Mitchell at 830-255-7423 if you’d like a ride. Also, please let me know if you’re willing to give a ride home. I’d like to make sure everyone’s taken care of if my car’s full. Thank you!

I would love for someone else to run the white elephant grab bag activity. Please let me know if you’re willing, and we’ll work something out! I’ve already planned a fast-paced game (if you don’t have a better idea). I would just love it if someone else would execute it.

Please don’t let the distance from town deter you! Let’s work out rides!

Saturday at the park bordered by Kahala Ave, Diamond Head Rd., and Paikau St. in Kahala.

@mediabaron is our host!

We’ll meet him beneath t he trees near the intersection of Paikau St. and Kaimanahila St. (see map on picture 2). He’ll have a blue picnic blanket spread out.

@dosjefes808 will be there, but you can also just bring your own snacks and drinks.

Bring a towel, blanket, or chair. Bring sunscreen if you wish. And bring something to read!

There is free street parking all around. There are no restrooms, but there are public park restrooms at Kilauea Park on 22nd Ave, and at the Kapiolani Community College Farmers Market, each about 5 minutes away (driving).

We can’t wait to read with you!

Meet at the state library in the Language, Literature, and History section — the left wing as you enter, straight back.

Librarian Emily is our host!

5 to 7, Thursday December 4.

Say hi. Take an optional group photo. Read for an hour. Stay and chat, keep reading, or call it a night!

We’re hoping to make this a monthly meetup, so if you can’t make this one, drop a comment or DM so we know you’re interested in future meetups here.

We’ll post details for each activity separately as always, but here’s a hype roll for December plus a little bonus hype. Make room in your planner for reading with us!

Hawaii State Library, Thursday the 4th, 5 to 7. Emily (a librarian!) is our host. Meet in the Language, Literature, and History section — first floor, left wing as you enter, straight back.

Parking. There’s metered parking all around. Street parking is free after 6.

We hope to make this recurring, first Thursday each month, so if you can’t make this one, please let us know that you’re interested in future meetups here!

We’ll spend the first half hour chatting and taking voluntary photos. Then we’ll read for an hour, and then call it a night, or chat a little more. The library closes at 7.

I would love for someone else to plan and run the white elephant grab bag activity. Please let me know if you’re willing, and we’ll work something out!

Tuesday, December 30, from 6 to whenever at Proof Social Club.

Proof Social Club is a bar in Downtown Honolulu where Chaplain Lane meets Fort Street Mall.

There is no program. Just show up, get something to eat or drink, read, and (if you like!) meet other book-lovers. Pasta Boys have said they’ll be there to provide reading fuel. Check out their Instagram to see what they might be offering!

We’ll have the book exchange table again, so bring a book or two if you’d like to make room on your bookshelf. The kitty lamps will also be there. And Proof has its own book exchange shelf, so please take a look there too!

Once again, if you can spell Mitchell for a half-hour shift at the greeting table, he would appreciate it. Please let me know if you can help.

Text mitchell at 830-255-7423 if you’d like a ride there, a ride home, company walking to or from your car or bus stop, or a long joke with a terrible punchline!

Jane Austen’s birthday. Saturday the 6th, 1 to 4. State Library‘s collab with the Jane Austen Society of North America Hawaii Chapter.

Kailua Silent Book Club. Saturday the 6th at Bottleheads in Kailua. $10.25 registration online includes a mimosa!

Maui Silent Book Club. Saturday the 6th at the Ku‘ia Chocolate Farm Cafe in Lahaina.

Oahu Indie Book Festival. Saturday February 21 at the Hawaii State Library. I’m hoping to do a Hawaii Silent Book Club activity at this event.

Silent Book Club HQ is hosting this retreat. There are kamaaina rates if you just want to sleep at home and attend the events. Registration and info here.

Saturday! 11-29-25! Kawaikui Beach Park, 3:30 to 5:30.

The park is on the far edge of Aina Haina going east, practically the last thing before Niu Valley. It has free parking, shady trees, and a (public park) restroom.

If the parking is full, maybe wait a few minutes to see if anyone leaves, and if not, the closest neighborhood parking is on Kirkwood, which is a 7- to 10-minute walk from the beach park.

Gina is your host!

Look for her in a shady spot on the Waimanalo side of the park (the left side as you’re facing the ocean)!

Bring snacks and drinks if you want. Bring a chair or beach towel and perhaps some sunscreen. Bring your physical books, ebooks, audio books, textbooks, comic books, or whatever!

We’ll chat a little, take a voluntary group photo, then read for about an hour, and then chat a little more. Socializing is totally optional, of course! Please add your name to our email list (if you’re not on it).

In my continuing effort to lessen my reliance on generative AI, I offer this hand-drawn encouragement to you.

Join us at Proof Social CLub Wednesday night, from 6 to whenever! There is no program or schedule. Just show up, find a spot, and read! Or chat! Or chat about reading!

The vibe is mellow, bookish, super welcoming, and inclusive.

Bring something to read, or find a new fave in the Proof Little Free Library (on the shelf in the cozy corner).

We’ll have a book exchange, so bring a few or take a few. We don’t have rules.

Pasta Boys will serve their deliciousness to go with great drinks, including some great mocktails.

1154 Fort St. Mall #10, where Fort Street meets Chaplain Lane. Text MItchell at 830-255-7423 if you have questions, if you get lost, if you would like company walking to or from your car (or bus stop), or if you’d like a ride home (I’ll probably leave just past 9).

Can’t wait to read with you!

Thursday evening! 6 to 9 at Kahala Mall!

IF IT RAINS, plan B is to try for the tables under the roof near the Whole Foods Market entrance. Plan C is finding tables in the mall itself. It’s okay if we don’t all sit together once in a while.

Don’t give up because of a little rain. Did the Little Engine That Could give up? Did Sam I Am give up? Did Holden Caufield give up?

Plan A: Meet at the big round table in front of Whole Foods Market. We’ll say hi, take an optional photo, and read for an hour. There are plenty of good food and drink options nearby, but there’s no pressure to spend money at all.

We’ll have a book exchange table, so bring a few or take a few. Whatever!

At around 7:30, we’ll call it a night, keep reading, or stick around and chat. Please add your name to our email list if you aren’t already on it.

See you there. We can’t wait to read with you!
