Finally!

Thursday night your Honolulu Silent Book Club rides again!

Kahala Mall. In front of the Whole Foods Market. Look for two hippos perched atop a book on the big round table if it’s not raining. Nearby (possibly at the tables under the eaves) if it is raining,

BUT I DARE IT TO RAIN!

Although there are lots of food and drink options, there’s no pressure to spend money. Lots of free parking. Decent bathrooms.

We’ll have a book exchange table (if no rain). Bring a few or take a few or whatever. We don’t have rules.

Bring something to read! Physical books, ebooks, audiobooks, or even textbooks!

It can get a little noisy, so bring noise-canceling ear things if that bothers you. Baron donated foam earplugs, which I’ll bring if I can find them.

We’ll say hi and chat for a while at 6, then take a voluntary group photo (someone remind Mitchell to do the group book photo this time). Then we’ll read quietly for an hour. At 7:30, stick around and chat, keep reading, or call it a night!

Can’t. Wait. To. Read. With you. FINALLY!

Come hang out and finally get through that to-read pile!

Kawaikui Beach Park is on the far edge of Aina Haina going east, practically the last thing before Niu Valley. It has free parking, shady trees, and a (public park) restroom.

If the parking is full, maybe wait a few minutes to see if anyone leaves, and if not, the closest neighborhood parking is on Kirkwood, which is a 7- to 10-minute walk from the beach park.

Gina is hosting! Look for her in a shady spot on the Waimanalo side of the park (the left side as you’re facing the ocean)!

Bring snacks and drinks if you want. Bring a chair or beach towel and perhaps some sunscreen. Bring your physical books, ebooks, audio books, textbooks, comic books, or whatever!

We’ll chat a little, take a voluntary group photo, then read for about an hour, and then chat a little more. Socializing is totally optional, of course! Please add your name to our email list (if you’re not on it).

Ready to escape the noise? We’re heading back to the Hawaii State Library for another round of glorious, uninterrupted reading. Whether you’re tackling that thick classic or a breezy beach read, there’s a chair (and a vibe) waiting for you!

Thursday, May 7
5:00 PM – 6:50 PM

The Hawaii State Library (First floor, Language, Literature, and History section).

Once you walk in, head to the left wing and go straight back. You’ll find Emily the Librarian holding down the fort for us!

Sort-of schedule (we’re flexible and may not stick to it exactly):

5:00 – 5:30: Mix, mingle, and flex those book covers! We’ll do some quick voluntary photos to show off what everyone is reading.

5:30 – 6:30: The “Quiet” part of the Silent Book Club. One solid hour of pure literary bliss.

6:30 – 6:50: Wrap up, final thoughts, or a little more chatting before the library closes its doors at 7:00.

Parking:

Metered spots are available all around the library.

Street parking becomes free at 6:00 PM.

The Iolani Palace lot is super close and secure. It also becomes free at 6:00, but they lock the gates then! Don’t panic—if you need to bail before 7:00, just flag down a security guard and they’ll let you out.

Forget your book? No sweat! You’re literally in a giant building filled with them. Grab something off the shelf and maybe even take a new friend home with your library card.

Let’s get those pages turning! See you there?

Bring a friend! The more the merrier!

Need proof?
Proof Readers Book Club!

6 to whenever at Proof Social Club, where Fort Street Mall meets Chaplain Lane.

There’s no program: just good books, good people, good vibes, good drinks (mocktails too!), and good food.

Bring something to read, or select something from our book exchange table or Proof’s Little Free Library to take home.

Find a spot and get lost in a book.
Or find a spot and chat about books.
Or just find a spot.
Your people are here.

Text Mitchell at 830-255-7423 if you’d like a ride home or if you’d like someone to accompany you to or from your car or bus stop. I mean it!

We can’t wait to read with you!

Get some boba in your belly, some books in your brain, and some music in your marrow at The Boba Room with our host Noah Plays Piano.

Saturday, April 25.

12-2 reading!
2-4 piano music with Noah!

At the Fabulous Boba Room in Waipahu, across the parking lot from Savers.

Some people have suggested we meet virtually Thursday night. I’m not a fan of video conferences, but if you would like to participate or if you’re willing to host, please leave a comment here or on any of our social media spaces (look for a photo of people reading on Zoom) and I will support it wholeheartedly, and announce it here and on the Meetup page.

I’m tired of being responsible, and I hate being told what to do.

Yet I remind myself: being cautious is about keeping each other safe. Please assume our Thursday readup at Kahala Mall is canceled again. If conditions are miserable, let’s leave the streets for people who have no choice but to be on them, and let’s keep ourselves out of the way so our public safety people can do their jobs.

Stay safe and dry. If it looks like the weather in town is accommodating Thursday evening, we can always reverse the call, but this doesn’t appear likely. DM me on our social media channels if you have questions, or text me at 830-255-7423 (830-ALL-RICE).

Read something dangerous. Don’t DO something dangerous. I miss you and can’t wait to ignore you in person again, so please tell me what you’re reading!

Mitchell

The Boba Room event with Noah is rescheduled for Saturday the 25th! I hated to delete the original April schedule with its (for us) enormous engagement, but it’s better to delete bad info if you can, so we did.

Details for each event as its date approaches. Until then, add these to your planner and let’s get ready to reeeeeeeeead!
